Andrew Marshall – Business & QS Manager

Andrew was raised on a small farm near Lincoln. He entered the construction industry as an apprentice carpenter working first on rural/residential projects before moving into commercial/civil construction with Downer Construction. He gained a New Zealand Certificate in Building and on completion of his carpentry apprenticeship, he moved to Hughes Rees Sara Construction as Building Cadet. Andrew then went off to London where he worked as a site manager on construction sites, but home is where the heart is and by 1997 he was back, to a contract role as Assistant Site Manager/QS with Hughes Rees Sara Construction Ltd on the $17 million Carpark and Farmers Store Development at Armagh and Gloucester Street in Christchurch.

Andrew’s management and communication skills got a substantial boost with the two years he spent as Operations Manager for Ohoka Downs Ltd, overseeing the management of an olive tree nursery, lifestyle block property development and contracting company. He completed his NZIM Diploma in Business Management while working as Construction Manager/Estimator for Bradford Building which gave him the experience and qualification to take on the challenges of being the owner of a company.

Richard Gibb – Contracts Manager

Raised in Dunedin, Richard is the last of nine children. He started his carpentry apprenticeship fresh out of school working for Downer Construction in their Dunedin branch. After almost eight years of employment they closed the branch, which resulted in him moving to Christchurch, in his words, he “never looked back”.

On his arrival in Christchurch, he was employed he was employed with a number of small to large construction companies as a Foreman and even spent one year as a polytechnic tutor until 2000 when he was employed as a foreman with Hughes Rees Sara Construction Ltd. He managed a number of contracts for the company, most notably Cashmere High School’s hall upgrade, the extension of Allied Pickfords’ warehouse, Papanui High School’s Major Wing, the redevelopment of Farmers Dunedin and a number of Farmers fit-outs in Christchurch.

During his employment with Hughes Rees Sara, he was given the opportunity to add to his Trade and advanced Trade Certificates by studying part time for Diplomas in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management, both of which he completed upon his return from the redevelopment of Farmers Dunedin. As an owner of HRS Construction, Richard’s experience in civil, commercial, light commercial to retail fit out makes him an invaluable member of our team.
